The process relies on the phase diagram of water, where the triple point marks the conditions at which ice, liquid water, and vapor coexist. By maintaining pressure below this point, typically around 0.01 to 0.1 millibar, sublimation becomes the dominant mechanism. Formulations often include excipients such as sugars or polymers that act as lyoprotectants and bulking agents. These additives help preserve the structure of the active ingredient and prevent collapse during drying. The choice of excipient and freezing rate influences the final cake morphology and stability.
Industries use lyophilization for pharmaceuticals, biological products, and food preservation. In the pharmaceutical sector, it extends the shelf life of injectable drugs, vaccines, and proteins that are unstable in aqueous solution. Food manufacturers apply freeze-drying to coffee, fruits, and ready meals to retain flavor and texture. The process is energy-intensive and requires specialized equipment, which limits its use to high-value products. Ongoing research examines how formulation and process parameters affect the quality of the final dried product.
Quality control also examines cake structure, color, and reconstitution behavior. A collapsed or shrunken cake can indicate a thermal excursion during drying. Analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and near-infrared spectroscopy can detect crystallinity or moisture distribution. Regulatory expectations focus on validated assays and lot-to-lot consistency. Questions remain about how well accelerated stability tests predict long-term behavior for every formulation. Visual inspection remains common but is subjective without trained reviewers and reference images.
After lyophilization, a product's quality depends on residual moisture, cake appearance, and reconstitution time. Residual moisture is often measured by Karl Fischer titration or thermogravimetric analysis. A low moisture content can slow chemical degradation, but overly dry cakes may be brittle or slow to dissolve. Stability studies track these attributes over months under defined temperature and humidity conditions. Batch records link these measurements to specific process runs and help identify trends before a product fails specification.

Serotonergic psychedelics are agonists not only of the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor but also of the serotonin 5-HT2B receptor and other serotonin receptors. A potential risk of frequent repeated use of serotonergic psychedelics is cardiac fibrosis and valvulopathy caused by serotonin 5-HT2B receptor activation. However, single high doses or widely spaced doses (e.g., months) are widely thought to be safe and concerns about cardiac toxicity apply more to chronic psychedelic microdosing or very frequent use (e.g., weekly). Selective serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonists that do not activate the serotonin 5-HT2B receptor or other serotonin receptors, such as 25CN-NBOH, DMBMPP, and LPH-5, have been developed and are being studied. Selective serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonists are expected to avoid the cardiac risks of serotonin 5-HT2B receptor activation.
=== Where lefse is found === In Norway today, most families tend to purchase their lefse rather than making it. While today's Norwegian Americans consider making lefse at Christmas a tradition, more families are turning to purchase it from the store instead. Lefse can also be found in many grocery stores around Midwestern states and the Pacific Northwest states, including Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Oregon, Alaska, and Washington. Norsland Lefse, a factory in Rushford, Minnesota, produces about a half million rounds of lefse each year. The foodway of Scandinavian lefse stretches from the Midwest all the way through northeastern Montana. Small lefse factories dot the landscape throughout this area, mostly in Norwegian communities. In the larger of these communities, Lefse can be found in grocery stores year round. In the Red River Valley specifically, "restaurants, supermarkets, and clubs all serve fish, lefse, and other specialties." Many United States Scandinavian festivals have booths to sell lefse, and it can also be ordered online.
== Biological function == Physiologically SPP processes signal peptides of classical MHC class I preproteins. A nine amino acid-long cleavage fragment is then presented on HLA-E receptors and modulates the activity of natural killer cells. SPP also plays a pathophysiological role; it cleaves the structural nucleocapsid protein (also known as core protein) of the Hepatitis C virus and thus influences viral reproduction rate. In mice, a nonamer peptide originating from the SPP protein serves as minor histocompatibility antigen HM13 that plays a role in transplant rejection The homologous proteases SPPL2A and SPPL2B promote the intramembrane cleavage of TNFα in activated dendritic cells and might play an immunomodulatory role. For SPPL2c and SPPL3 no substrates are known. SPPs do not require cofactors as demonstrated by expression in bacteria and purification of a proteolytically active form. The C-terminal region defines the functional domain, which is in itself sufficient for proteolytic activity.
CT imaging uses X-rays in conjunction with computing algorithms to image the body. In CT, an X-ray tube opposite an X-ray detector (or detectors) in a ring-shaped apparatus rotates around a patient, producing a computer-generated cross-sectional image (tomogram). CT is acquired in the axial plane, with coronal and sagittal images produced by computer reconstruction. Radiocontrast agents are often used with CT for enhanced delineation of anatomy. Although radiographs provide higher spatial resolution, CT can detect more subtle variations in attenuation of X-rays (higher contrast resolution). CT exposes the patient to significantly more ionizing radiation than a radiograph.

Their job done, the Lanterns regain their original green rings, in preparation for the final confrontation with Krona. Following the War's conclusion, John assists a new Green Lantern from Sector 282 'selected' during the period when Mogo was under Krona's control in adjusting to the power of her ring despite the possibility that she will not be allowed to keep it by assisting her in halting a war taking place in her sector, the original Lantern for that sector having died during the war. When John is able to help the two sides find a peaceful resolution to their conflict, his new student reflects that, despite John's reputation after destroying two worlds, she now knows that nobody could regret that action more than John himself.
Although the mechanism by which Hmd acts is unknown, the iron-containing cofactor is in part responsible for the catalytic activity. High concentrations of CO inhibit the enzyme as well, implicating iron as the center of catalysis. It has been proposed that the iron functions to bind H2 and the substrate methenyltetrahydromethanopterin, organizing these two reactants in close proximity.
Each nucleotide in RNA contains a ribose sugar, with carbons numbered 1' through 5'. A base is attached to the 1' position, in general, adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), or uracil (U). Adenine and guanine are purines, and cytosine and uracil are pyrimidines. A phosphate group is attached to the 3' position of one ribose and the 5' position of the next. The phosphate groups have a negative charge each, making RNA a charged molecule (polyanion). The bases form standard hydrogen bonds between cytosine and guanine and between adenine and uracil, while guanine and uracil can pair through a non-canonical G–U wobble base pair. However, other interactions are possible, such as a group of adenine bases binding to each other in a bulge, or the GNRA tetraloop that has a guanine–adenine base-pair.
== Detoxification and related reactions == 4-HNE has two reactive groups: the conjugated aldehyde and the C=C double-bond, and the hydroxy group at carbon 4. The α,β-unsaturated ketone serves as a Michael acceptor, adding thiols to give thioether adducts. A small group of enzymes are specifically suited to the detoxification and removal of 4-HNE from cells. Within this group are the glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) such as hGSTA4-4 and hGST5.8, aldose reductase, and aldehyde dehydrogenase. These enzymes have low Km values for HNE catalysis and together are very efficient at controlling the intracellular concentration, up to a critical threshold amount, at which these enzymes are overwhelmed and cell death is inevitable. Glutathione S-transferases hGSTA4-4 and hGST5.8 catalyze the conjugation of glutathione peptides to 4-hydroxynonenal through a conjugate addition to the alpha-beta unsaturated carbonyl, forming a more water-soluble molecule, GS-HNE. While there are other GSTs capable of this conjugation reaction (notably in the alpha class), these other isoforms are much less efficient and their production is not induced by the stress events which cause the formation of 4-HNE (such as exposure to hydrogen peroxide, ultraviolet light, heat shock, cancer drugs, etc.), as the production of the more specific two isoforms is. This result strongly suggests that hGSTA4-4 and hGST5.8 are specifically adapted by human cells for the purpose of detoxifying 4-HNE to abrogate the downstream effects which such a buildup would cause.

Some early Neanderthal teeth from Payré, France, potentially date to MIS 8, but the dating is uncertain. Genetic data usually estimates that Neanderthals diverged from modern humans sometime during the early Middle Pleistocene. Neanderthals and Denisovans are more closely related to each other than they are to modern humans, meaning the Neanderthal/Denisovan split occurred sometime later. Before splitting, Neanderthal/Denisovans (or "Neandersovans") migrating out of Africa into Europe apparently interbred with an unidentified "superarchaic" human species who were already present there; these superarchaics were the descendants of a very early migration out of Africa around 1.9 million years ago. Genetic data indicates that Neanderthals, at least after 100,000 years ago, maintained a small population with low genetic diversity, weakening natural selection and proliferating harmful mutations. It is unclear how long European populations suffered this population stress, or to what extent it influenced Neanderthalization.
=== Activation of emitters === The growth process of microneedles on emitters is termed ‘activation’. The tips of microneedles can provide high field strength for field desorption, and higher emission current can be obtained due to the increased emission area compared to metal tips. Some activation methods include high-temperature (HT) activation, high-rate (HR) activation, and electrochemical desorption. In the HT activation mode, a 10 μm tungsten wire is activated outside the mass spectrometer in a vacuum cell containing benzonitrile at a pressure of about 10−1 Pa. The tungsten wire serving as the field anode is then heated up to about 1500 K with direct current at a potential of about 10 kV with respect to a cathode. Carbon microneedles can be produced within 8-12 h. HR activation method is to reverse the polarity of the emitter and the counter electrode, which emits a strong electron current. The strong electron current results in the heating of the growing carbon needles and therefore the high rates of the needle growth. In the HR activation mode, needles of other metals (iron, nickel or cobalt) and of alloys can also be generated. Instead of carbon microneedles, metallic dendrites (mainly of nickel or cobalt) can be produced on thin wires through electrochemical desorption process. This method is even faster than HR method.
Chairman Mao Zedong and his People's Republic of China founded in 1949 was critical of Han chauvinism. In the latter half of the 20th century, official policy of communist China marked Han chauvinism as anti-Marxist. Today, the tension between the dominant Han Chinese majority and ethnic minorities remains contentious, as the deterioration in ethnic relations has compounded by China's contemporary ethnic policies in favor of ethnic minorities since its founding. Han chauvinism has been gaining mainstream popularity throughout China since the 2000s, attributed to discontent toward these ethnic policies instituted by the Chinese government. The contemporary dissatisfaction and discord between the dominant Han Chinese mainstream and its non-Han minorities has led to the Chinese government scaling back on preferential treatment for ethnic minorities under the general secretaryship of Xi Jinping.
Np(VI) or NpO2+2, the neptunyl ion, shows a light pink or reddish color in an acidic solution and yellow-green otherwise. It is a strong Lewis acid and is the main neptunium ion encountered in solutions of pH 3–4. Though stable in acidic solutions, it is quite easily reduced to the Np(V) ion, and it is not as stable as the homologous hexavalent ions of its neighbours uranium and plutonium (the uranyl and plutonyl ions). It hydrolyzes in basic solutions to form the oxo and hydroxo ions NpO2OH+, (NpO2)2(OH)2+2, and (NpO2)3(OH)+5.
Fat accumulation in the liver or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is strongly related with several metabolic disorders, in particular low HDL cholesterol and high triglycerides, present in patients with type 2 diabetes. It became apparent that exenatide reduced liver fat in mice, rat and more recently in man.

Conventional drying uses heat to evaporate water from a material, while lyophilization freezes the material and removes water by sublimation under vacuum. This avoids the liquid phase and reduces thermal damage to sensitive substances. The result is a porous cake that reconstitutes quickly.
A vacuum lowers the pressure below the triple point of water, allowing ice to sublimate directly into vapor without melting. It also removes water vapor from the product chamber and speeds up the drying process. Without vacuum, the ice would melt rather than sublimate.
Not all substances are suitable for lyophilization. Materials must form a stable frozen matrix and tolerate freezing and low pressure. Some small molecules, oils, or volatile compounds may not form a proper cake or may be lost during processing.
Karl Fischer titration is a common reference method that quantifies water by a chemical reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis can also estimate moisture by weight loss on heating. Method choice depends on sample size and whether other volatile substances are present.
